Lawmakers demand Nigeria appeal ICJ ruling on Bakassi

The House of Representatives, on Wednesday,
called on the Federal Government to
commence the process of the review of the
International Court of Justice judgment that
ceded Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon before
October 10, 2012.
The International Court of Justice had, on October 10,
2002 in a judgment, ceded Bakassi Peninsula to
Cameroon, the area was shared by Cross River,
Borno, Taraba and Adamawa states.
The House's ultimatum on the case was sequel to a
Motion of Urgent National Importance moved by
Honourable Ayi, entitled: "A Call for Review of the
International Court of Justice Judgment on Bakassi,"
claiming that the judgment was entered in error.
To this end, he said there was need to review the
judgment based on new facts that had now emerged
on the case.
He cited legal precedents where ICJ judgments were
challenged and reversed. The different countries of
the world that had applied for the revision of ICJ
judgments, according to him, included El Salvador Vs
Honduras in 2002.
